Hadrien is a very average young boy living with his family in a remote village.  Far from civilization and the watchful eyes of the Valor-weilders, he and his family are used to taking care of themselves--even when it comes to fending off the giant beasts and monsters that roam the land.  

Their expectations are suddenly shaken when a beast is chased into their village by Braveguard, the followers of the Utan, god of courage.  Hadrien finally meets the great heroes he's heard so much about about: those blessed with the Valors to fight the beasts and monsters, but this meeting is not at all what he expected.
